This year, rather than choose another diet that was destined to fail, I decided to start changing my food attitudes and habits by simply trying to make healthier choices. This day, this hour, this snack, I would forget counting calories and fat grams and Weight Watcher points and just focus on making one healthy decision at a time. I decided that I would focus on a higher protein diet early in the day, less refined sugar and especially sugary drinks, and more activity in 2014. My biggest struggle is with the giant pitcher of refreshing sweet tea (with lots of sugar – the way we like it in Oklahoma) that Mr. Fix It keeps in the fridge. It calls to me, especially when I’m worn out and in need of a quick pick me up. Bigelow Tea has been my salvation this month when it comes to keeping that sweet tea monster at bay.
The best thing I’ve discovered about Bigelow Tea this month is what a great iced tea it makes. I had always thought of this as hot tea, something to be enjoyed when it’s snowy out and I’m snuggled under my favorite quilt. But this month, I’ve been brewing one glass at a time, and then pouring it over ice and sweetening it with my favorite no calorie sweetener. I wouldn’t have believed it was possible, but it’s even more refreshing than Mr. Fix It’s sweet tea. My very favorite varieties to enjoy this way are Plantation Mint, Green Tea, and Mint Green Tea. I’ve found that when I’ve exerted myself, whether I’ve been taking care of Josie, working out, or cleaning a chicken coop, my resistance to that pitcher of sweet tea is at it’s very weakest. I’ve learned to brew a cup right before those activities, so it’s ready and waiting for me when I get done.
My go to breakfast (and sometimes snack) this month has been plain Greek yogurt. By using plain yogurt, I can avoid the refined sugar in the flavored varieties, and instead sweeten it with local honey, fruit, or sometimes even that same no-calorie sweetener that I use in my tea. I love to pair it with a cup of Constant Comment or Chai Tea for a breakfast that keeps me satisfied for a long, long time.
I used to grab a can of pop out of the fridge on my way out the door to run errands, but this month I’ve been taking just a couple extra minutes to put a cup of my favorite tea in a travel mug. It really doesn’t take long, and it’s so much better for me.
Wouldn’t you like to come over and join me and the chickens for our afternoon tea time?
I always get the munchies late at night. This month I’ve been reaching for a cup of Cozy Camomille to satisfy my craving and relax me before bed.
Early this month, I came down with my annual croupy chest cold. I always hate getting it, because I know that the cough will just never… go… away. I didn’t want to totally blow it, even though when I have a cold I usually reach for hot chocolate. So this year I tried Hot Lemonade Tea. I just put 3 tablespoons of lemon juice in a mug with my favorite no-calorie sweetener, then added a teabag and hot water and allowed it to brew for a couple of minutes. It was great for opening up my airways and making me feel so much better.
By keeping my focus in the moment, on the healthy choice before me right now, I never fail. I might choose for this moment to celebrate my son’s birthday or my daughter’s wedding with a small piece of cake. But that doesn’t mean I should feel guilty. I just made the decision that was right for me in that moment. And I can continue making healthy choices without feeling that I’ve stumbled.
This week when I was at WalMart I noticed that they have these great new Bonus Packs. That’s 4 extra tea bags for the same great price! That makes my tea less than 9¢ a cup. I think that’s a great deal.
